Putting Into Practice What You Learned

How do you recap 3 days at a technology conference that has over 16,000 educators in attendance in 1 blog? CILC is going to do its best to wrap up how we were able to connect educators to our great resources and how they can extend that learning beyond the conference with action items.

As an exhibitor in an expo hall filled with endless opportunities for educators, CILC strived to find a way to stand out in the crowd. During the 3 days at the conference we had a variety of our wonderful Content Providers who create and deliver over 1,800 different programs on our website. Attendees had the ability to directly ask Content Providers about their programs and discover how easy it is to use the programs in their classroom. They learned that the programs are engaging, interactive, global and are aligned to educational standards.

CILC used ISTE as the opportunity to debut our brand new PLN  (Professional Learning Network) sponsored by Cisco Education. The PLN provides members the ability  to live chat, message, blog, post discussions, tweet and more with fellow members. The multiple platforms for connecting allows members to use the tools that they are most familiar and comfortable with. Members can also use the multiple platforms to find new ways to connect with other members. The PLN Dashboard is designed to be a one stop shop for all your needs.

Members will get the latest on what is going on in the PLN and have an opportunity to connect. Instead of having to use go to various websites or chat areas,   members find it all in one place. ISTE attendees were able to see how the PLN worked at the booth and were able to sign up for the PLN and get started growing their network in less than 50 seconds. Time yourself and see if you can join our PLN in under a minute!

We hope that educators realize that CILC is expanding boundaries, igniting imaginations and putting the world at our members fingertips! We encourage you to search our program database and book a program today that fits your student’s needs!

Putting Into Practice What You Learned

Video in the Classroom: Its All About You!

In a recent study, video applications were found to be the number one talked about topic on Twitter in the Ed Tech area.  (get source and graphic) We at CILC and Cisco Education are excited to announce that we have created a Professional Learning Network (PLN) for all educators interested in the many ways video can be used to engage and inspire learners.

Our PLN allows members to connect in a variety of ways including live chats, messaging, blogging, scheduled special events, twitter chats and more! It’s is a unique one stop shop for you to grow your PLN with like minded colleagues from around the world!

Have you heard that “the bird is the word?” Well, the twitter bird sure is. Do you love to tweet and find it an easy way to gain professional information? Then join #ivcchat the second Tuesday of the month at 8pm EST. The chat is designed to provide members the opportunities to respond to 4 to 5 questions about various topics. Topics and the moderator change monthly to provide our members the ability to have various interactions and learn from each other. Our first Twitter Chat, July 14 will be about personalizing professional development.

Want the ability to live chat fellow educators from around the world about an opportunity for your classrooms to connect and create a global exchange? Then find colleagues and live chat using the PLN’s chat feature for a quick connection with your global network.

Like to be inspired by the written word? Then join a PLN discussion or read the latest blog posted by various PLN members and CILC’s Content Providers and Professional Development Providers. The discussions allow members to leave comments and connect with fellow colleagues about similar interests.

Grab a seat and check out the events section of the PLN. CILC and Cisco Education will be continuously adding events for our PLN members to take a part in. Events include opportunities to learn from CILC Professional Development providers as well as experts in many fields. All events are recorded and available to members at a later date.

Cold Dinos: Exploring Exploring Fossils in the Antartica-Educator Led Visit

Antarctica was not always a cold, desolate, and arid place. Several million years ago, the landscape was lush and dinosaurs roamed. What happened to change this verdant landscape into the white tundra that it is today? How can the fossils of creatures past help us to understand our world in the present day? Join us and meet Dr. Pete Makovicky, Curator of Dinosaurs, to see what mysteries he uncovered on his expedition to Antarctica. Explore The Field Museum’s Antarctic fossil collections, which tell us a much different story about Antarctica’s past as a temperate environment.

From Sticks to Bricks – Why We Stopped Moving and Formed Cities: Scientist Led Visit

Today, more than half of the world’s population lives in urban centers. To anthropologists like Dr. Bill Parkinson, Associate Curator of Eurasian Anthropology, this is a curious puzzle because humans are natural hunter-gatherers, roaming in small groups over specific geographic regions. Over time humans began to settle and form societies, but this transition from a nomadic lifestyle to a settled way of living is not well understood. Meet Dr. Parkinson and learn what he has uncovered about the changes in society on the Great Hungarian Plain throughout the Holocene Age (11,700 years ago – present).

#DiscoverDL:”An Illuminated Valentine: The Roots of Romantic Love”

Content Provider: Born 2 Move Movement

Join “An Illuminated Valentine” for a foray into distant times and lands, from ancient Rome, to Medieval Provence, France and England; by way of the Renaissance in Central Europe, to the Romantic and Modern eras. We sample perspectives and sentiments of love by the troubadour Bernart de Ventadorn, the poets Geoffrey Chaucer, Charles d’Orleans, and Albert Giraud; feel the tug on our heart strings by composers Henry Purcell, Claude Debussy and Arnold Schoenberg; and culminate with an embodiment of love by the Commedia dell’ Arte figure of Pierrot, who was touched by the penultimate knowledge of love (or was he just “touched”?).

Along the way, we enjoy poetic expressions of “Amor” through the media of opera, dance, and mime! Throughout this journey, aspects and attributes of Valentine’s Day can be glimpsed as metaphors for the manifestation of the notion of “Romantic Love”, differentiating our specie’s mating activities from those of the animals.
